The tongue is like a sharp knife, killing without drawing blood. Words from a skilled person can cause greater harm than a warrior’s weapon.[1]

We are what we think.[2]

Victory breeds hatred. The defeated live in pain. Happily the peaceful live, giving up victory and defeat.[3]

A fool who knows he is a fool is for that very reason a wise man. The fool who thinks he is wise is the one to be called a fool.[4]

Careless words bring suffering, while gentle words bring peace.[5]

All conditioned phenomena are like a dream, an illusion, a bubble, a shadow, like dew or a flash of lightning; thus should one view them.[6]

Form is emptiness; emptiness is form.[7]

The Buddha said: 'One who practices the Way is like a single warrior fighting ten thousand enemies. He dons his armor and leaves the gate; some may become fearful and retreat, some may die in battle, but some will return victorious.'[8]

One who practices the Way is like an ox pulling a heavy load through deep mud. The ox is so extremely exhausted that it dares not glance to the left or right. Only when it gets out of the mud can it rest. The Shramana should regard emotion and desire as being worse than deep mud; and with an undeviating mind, he should be mindful of the Way. Then he can avoid suffering.[9]

All conditioned things are impermanent. He who realizes this through insight, becomes disenchanted with suffering. This is the path to purity.[10]
